Daughter's opinion in Total Girl magazine June 2014

My daughter is 10 and she has her own points-of-view about life.
Her thoughts and opinions are something I will always respect.

Total Girl Magazine
Taylor Swift cover - my daughter is a fan too! :)
She shared her thoughts about school achievements on this month's issue of Total Girl magazine. It's her favorite magazine, a magazine that she's been reading since she was 4 years old.

The topic is: Is it important to be included in the honor roll - yes or no?

Total Girl Magazine, Girltalk, June 2014
Pge 46 - Girl Talk Star Student Manual
Her answers remained firm. She gave lengthy explanations, but of course, it got edited to fit the word/page requirement.

Read what she has to say:

Bring Home the Playset Fun

Spending time in the playground is a fun physical exercise. In this age of technology and video games, some kids would rather keep themselves busy with the latest gadget or games.

It's great to see kids spending time in outdoor playground. They can spend hours playing in the swing or see-saw, sliding down the tube slides and hanging on monkey bars.

A playset is safe source of enjoyment for kids. It also enhances their physical skills and motor development. They also learn to share and take turns. It will burn their energies positively and stimulates creativity too.

I love this wooden playsets in charlotte. It's an outdoor wooden playset created for many years of use. Kids would surely have fun in the sling swings, horse glider, wave slide, and in the trapeze. They can get more adventurous with the rock climb plank and cargo net. The quality and safety provided is superb.

Childhood memories last a lifetime. If you have a space in your background, take time to consider buying a playset for it would help create that wonderful memory. These playsets are created to revive enhance kid's childhood spirit and imagination. Nothing can match the pleasure of playing outdoors where kids can have the grandest time of their lives.

On Parenting Tips and Advices

One of the best things that happened to me is being a mom. It makes every day very fulfilling, challenging and exciting at the same time.

Being a mom was never easy. I have been thankful that my hubby and everyone in my family had been very supportive. Even until now, I got the support and encouragement that I need from them. More than that, they celebrate with me my kids' achievements. To say that they are the wind beneath my wings is an understatement.

Aside from that, I also find myself reading parenting magazines and turning to the Internet for more parenting tips and information. In the parenting websites, I find ways that helped me in taking care of my kids. With so much technology, mom forums can be a life saver too. There are some online community forums where dads take time to interact with fellow parents. I find that act very admirable.

Logging into an online mom forum is worth spending time to. These forums are filled with different moms who from all over are enjoying their roles as mothers. There are different situations that I can somehow relate to and I find many questions answered or have already been asked by other people before. There I learned more ticks and tricks on putting my baby sleep to sleep, the best baby products that is good from their skin and even the importance of baby music and baby books; and a lot more. I found pregnancy, newborn, toddler and even working mom topics very beneficial.

As my kids grow, I remember checking these forums when searching for a good preschool around the neighborhood and finding out Halloween events, Easter egg hunting activities or summer programs that my kids can attend.

It's great to check out parenting forums from time to time and interact with fellow parents. More than that, these mom forums also makes me remember that as I give time to care and protect my family, I must not forget to provide time for myself too. In allows me to realize the importance of those "me-time-moments" in making sure that I fulfill my mommy duties to the fullest and be a better mom to my kids.

Be a Kid Entrepreneur

My daughter made this For Sale sign for their school event.

school food sale

As part of their Math and Science week, students from Grades 1 to 3 participated in the school food sale.

She told me that students bought candies, chocolates, cookies, foods (shanghai, cheese sticks, spaghetti, carbonara, sandwiches) and drinks for the activity. Though, they could not sell food as high as 20 pesos. This event teaches them about Philippine bills and coins, how to count and make changes.

She enjoyed selling her chocolates and marshmallows. We only bought few pieces and her food container was nearly empty when she arrived home (though they ate leftovers in the school service). She excitedly announced, "Ang dami kong nabenta!" She sold around Php 140... and for her, that's a lot already. That's her first earnings and we're proud of her! But she also realized how hard selling can be! Learnings.

She shared funny and inspiring stories based on other students' food sale experiences as well - as to what items are the best sellers, who made lots of money and foods that she bought. Now, she's looking forward to the next school food sale event! :)

This food sale also allows kids to experience setting up their little businesses, and buy items from their fellow students.

Who knows, maybe some of these students would grow up to be future entrepreneurs!

Kids can be entrepreneurs while they're still young. Parents can give them encouragement and support that they need. Since school summer vacation is almost near, you can allow your kids to enjoy and experience running their own little businesses too!

Grand Baby Fair

Buying items for babies is truly enjoyable even if I'm not on the family-way and my toddlers are now kids.

Last Sunday, we dropped by Baby Company's Grand Baby Fair at SM Megatrade Hall. Pregnant mommies with their hubbies and little kids filled the place. There are fantastic deals for baby supplies and lots of discounted items! It's great to see moms and dads filling their shopping baskets and carts with baby needs.

I bought Chicco bottle sterilizer, at a 20% discount, for my kuya and sis-in-law (the expecting their third baby this March), and Johnson baby products for my kids. My youngest sister grabbed a Chicco toy for our cute nephew.

We got this Swag Bag which is given free upon purchase of P 2,000. Its loaded with product samples and useful freebies. I lost my Mom Card which I got from last year’s Baby Fair, so I didn’t get to have the free cellphone holder.

 Inside my Swag bag are:

Magazines (Mom’s Today, Total Girl, K-zone), Mimiflo baby hangers, Toy Story bath sponge, diapers (Pampers Active Baby, Huggies Newborn), Chicco Pacifiers, Hello Dolly Mittens, Ceelin vitamins, Mini Notebook, Ainon burp cloth, St. Patrick bib, Philips Avent VIA cup, Oilatum Bar, Disney Baby keychain, Pigeon Baby’s Pocketbook, Ascof Forte tablets, Charlie’s Soap hypoallergenic laundry powder, vouchers and coupons (Great Image and Tiny Love).

I also got to pick these prizes - two Philips Avent VIA cup and bib from the Avent booth (sad that one of the cup and bib got lost) and a Johnson's baby soap from Johnson's booth. Goldilocks booth handed us three Mickey Mouse choco-lollipops.

It's good that the payment system is now much better compared to last year! There are also learning segments, interactive activities and games, play area of Gymboree and Wilkins drinking water stations.

This Grand Baby Fair only comes once in a year, so pregnant moms and moms with toddlers should watch out for the next baby fair.

Smart Parenting Meet and Greet: Enlightening and Inspiring

SP_meet-greet

The Smart Parenting Meet and Greet had been an enlightening afternoon filled with inspiring talk and interesting discussions.

Being a former Summit Media employee, it felt good to be invited as one of the lucky magazine reader, together with my sister and my nephew. There I've met mommy and online friends, bloggers, and of course, the people behind Smart Parenting magazine and SmartParenting.com.ph.

"Words are more powerful than fact."
"Choose your words... direct your kids' life"
"... words that daily empower them to direct their life, their decisions"

words

All these interesting words came from the informative talk by Aileen Santos. Her talk on raising successful and happier kids thru the power of words is indeed very insightful. She shared the value of words, the labels that parents put on their kids, and its effect on their lives.

She used as an example the water-crystal experiment (crystalline formations made on both clean and dirty water ) conducted by Japanese scientist Masaru Emoto. It illustrated what words words can do to human beings.

The talk was followed by discussions with Smart Parenting staff where we, readers, share insights and suggestions as to what we'd like to see and improve about Smart Parenting.

There had been a raffle as well. My sister won baby products and I'm happy for getting a this cute prize - a mini water dispenser from Sangobion.

Thank you Smart Parenting and sponsors for these goodies.

National Geographic Little Kids

smart_parenting_magazine-national-geographic-kids

It's good that National Geographic Little Kids is now bundled with Smart Parenting magazine. I'm a magazine subscriber and receiving this mini-magazine is a great bonus!

My kids, especially my son, loves the first mini-magazine that features the penguins. He's really fond of books and stories about animals. When he saw the page about the Antartica animals, he instantly said, "this is cute"! He answers the activities with much delight. He even asked me if I still have more magazines.

Aside from the fun and interesting facts, National Geographic Little Kids is also filled with games, activities, recipes, crafts, science experiments, etc. that parents can do with their kids.

This time, kids can look forward to receiving this mini-literature everytime their moms get a copy of Smart Parenting magazine. Indeed, it's never too early to get your kids. It can really satisfy their thirst for knowledge.

Smart Parenting and National National Geographic Little Kids are available in newsstands, bookstores and supermarkets for P125.

Or, you can be a magazine subscriber too!

PBA Finalist For Home and Parenting

The Philippine Blog Awards 2011 winners would be announced this coming Dec. 3 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City!

I can't believe that my blog is considered as one of the Finalists for Home and Parenting Category – National Level!

Weird feelings crept in when I got to read the email. Why did the nomination came during this time when I'm experiencing blog drought? Would this bring back the love?

How I wish the judges would let me know what they recognized in my blog or what made them choose me as a nominee. That made me think... yet, I could not discern.

I am more than thankful because some people see what I could not and a few appreciated my small space on the web. In the blogging world, I just see myself as a small fish in the ocean or a mushroom in a garden full of plants, trees and flowers. There's so much I still need to learn and experience.

Honestly, for quite some time, I lost my passion. A phase I hope would soon pass. Blog posts kept running in my mind every day. How I always wish my mind alone can write those words.

I salute those who maintain many blogs and manage to update theirs regularly. That I wish I could do.

Every time I thought of leaving this blog, I look back and remember. And I look forward. Then I realize what I'll be missing. This blog had somehow made me a better woman, a better person.

Honestly, do I consider myself as one worthy to receive an award? I don't.

But then, I remain to be grateful and I will always be!

Thank you to those whom I inspired, who dropped by from time to time and appreciated my few posts.

May this PBA nomination awaken my senses to see the beauty that blogging had once given me.

Yes, I'm happy to be included in the list of great blogs that I also look upon to - The Finalists for Home and Parenting Category (National Level):

A Woman Remembers (serenityoverload.blogspot.com)
Dainty Mom (www.daintymom.com)
Her Fashionality is Motherhood (www.trishvelarmino.com)

My Happy Home (www.eleanoraguilar.com)
Pinay Mommy Online (www.pinaymommyonline.com)
Proud Mommy of Three (www.mommyrubz.com)

Let me congratulate all the finalists and (in advance) all the winners of the PBA 2011!

More power!

DOH Breastfeeding TSEK Campaign

Breastmilk is still best for babies! It is the perfect food for newborns for it has the right nutrients needed for growth and development. Most moms know the benefits of breastfeeding, but not everyone know that from birth to six months, breastmilk does not need to be supplemented.

DOH bloggers engagement

Six months of exclusive breastmilk — no water, infant formula, other liquid, or food for a child is required to get optimum nutrition. Breastmilk helps fight infections, prevent allergies, and protect against a number of chronic conditions.

This was the highlight of Department of Health (DOH) campaign Breastfeeding TSEK: (Tama, Sapat, Eksklusibo) that encourages mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding for six months. The campaign will run through the end of August, reaching out to new and expectant moms, primarily in lower-income levels.

breastfeeding TSEK campaign

Tama - immediate and appropriate breastfeeding within one hour after birth
Sapat - mother's milk is sufficient (in nutrients and quantity) for the baby up to 6 months
Ekslusibo - exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, just pre mother's milk only

The campaign hopes to address the lack of information among moms, educate them about the many benefits of breastmilk and increase the number of moms who exclusively breastfeeds from birth up to six months.

breastfeeding campaign
DOH ASEC Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial and DOH Supervising Health Program Officer Dr. Anthony Calibo

Based on statistics, breastfeeding practice in the Philippines is very low. Only one of every six infants are exclusively breastfed for first six months of life. In a survey done in 2008, only 54% of mothers breastfeed their babies.

In the recent DOH Bloggers Engagement at Alejandra Hotel, Makati, DOH Assistant Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial made a call and tapped bloggers to help spread the word in order to reach a wider audience.

She also cited that milk stations at different institutions and establishments makes a significant value in this campaign.

DOH Supervising Health Program Officer Dr. Anthony Calibo believes that in breast milk 'dito ka talagang mapapanatag.' He noted the top reasons why moms breastfeed and why moms stop breastfeeding. He also emphasized the importance of Essential Newborn Care Protocol, the need to include breastfeeding in the expectant moms’ birth plan, as well as maternal nutrition.

why moms breastfeed,breastfeeding facts

+ Role of hospitals, health facilities and the society

The speakers also highlight the importance of lactation support that a breastfeeding mom needs from the people that surrounds her. Moreover, they urged hospitals and health facilities to be 'baby friendly,' and stressed the need to provide space for breastfeeding moms in the workplace.

The campaign emphasizes the importance of establishing a supportive community that 'exclusive breastfeeding' mothers need from the society. It targets family members, employers, healthcare providers and the community who will all serve as their breastfeeding support group.

DOH is committed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals on child and acknowledges the role of exclusive breastfeeding in saving children's lives.

The DOH campaign is not just for moms, but for the entire society. It also aims to revive the Milk Code (EO 51) or the National Code of Marketing breastmilk substitute, breastmilk supplements and related products.

In Smart Parenting Magazine Once Again

summit-media_smart-parenting-november

Smart Parenting magazine included my short parenting POV and thoughts in their November issue. For three consecutive months, starting Septembe 2009, my parenting views were published in Smart Parenting.

I shared a brief note on the Parent's Point of View Section on the topic about buying preschoolers a handheld video game and another for the Last Thoughts section for the topic on how to get kids help at home. I love it when my views were published together with other moms.
I am just proud to be on Smart Parenting.

Smart Parenting November 2009 issue, which features Angelina Jolie sharing about motherhood as her favorite role, is still available at all leading bookstores. Get to read articles about choosing the right school for your child, on whether to go traditional or progressive; as well as some preschool problems.
