Invite from NASA: Send your name to Mars: Insight!

NASA boarding pass - my ticket to ride!

Mars trip anyone? Ok, I once dreamed of becoming a space explorer. Receiving the email from NASA Mars Outreach is just exciting.

Again, NASA is inviting the world on its Mars: Insight mission.

Our names will be recorded on a silicon microchip and shuttled to Mars onboard the InSight Mars lander. So, it's not really getting up there, which is good enough.

NASA’s InSight Mars lander is scheduled to blast off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in March 2016. InSight will study the deep interior of Mars to understand how all of the rocky planets are formed – including Earth!
"... be part of that journey and the future of space exploration."
‪#‎JourneyToMars‬

This is the second time that NASA has given the public to feel included in their mission. My son is really amazed about all this.

I was also part of the first test mission of the Orion spacecraft capsule. I'm even a Frequent Flyer with NASA. Cool!

I'm a Martian since 10/2014 :)
So, get your boarding pass to Mars from NASA!

To send your name on the Red Planet aboard InSight, go to: http://mars.nasa.gov/participate/send-your-name/insight/

Last day to register is on September 8, 2015 (11:59 p.m. ET).

Building robots at FIRST Robotics Learning Center

My kids learned to build and program their first robot - a robot that is really functioning!

Glad I signed up for FIRST Robotics Learning Center's Mommy Bloggers trial class. I know it would be a great activity for my son (who dreams of becoming a scientist or a robotics engineer) and my daughter (who also wants to be an engineer like me).

FIRST Robotics Learning Center makes use of the concept learning with fun. It's really fun since they're using Lego - Duplo, Wedo and Mindstorms - to create their robots.

Robotics for 9+ age kids

The 9+ age group where my kids and my nephew belong uses Lego Mindstorms robotics kit (complete with NXT brick computer, cables, sensors and motors).

Teacher Gelai gave the kids a short intro, plus the basic building instructions. Since the kids are ready, off they start building their first robot - the Castor Bot.

My son wants to explore more and try using the EV3 platform (as it can be controlled by smart-devices). OK, hopefully soon.

What I love about FIRST Robotics?

Being an engineer myself and my husband, a programmer - got us interested in their classes. I'm sure most parents want to give it a try too! :)

FIRST Robotics Learning Center is a place where our kids can showcase their creativity, resourcefulness and make their ideas come to life. Its a way for kids to understand and appreciate what they are learning in school. Kids get to enjoy learning without the pressures in traditional school.

Building robot models engages their hands to work and their minds to think. They'll learn by observing, creating, exploring, doing challenges and troubleshooting. By working with other people, they'll be great team players too.

Plus, they have four IDEA (Invention, Discover, Explore and Aspire) rooms where the robotic courses are held. The entire place is clean, bright and colorful.

Remember 2011 | Tech Moments

Hope you all had a meaningful Christmas!

Truly, there's no place like Christmas as home. Food, lots of presents and togetherness makes our family's Christmas more wonderful.

Year 2011 is coming to a close. It had been a good one and for that I am thankful.

"Life holds so many simple blessings, each day bringing its own individual wonder." - J.McLeod

For the past years, I never fail to write about some of the fondest memories of the months that passed. I even shared some here in my blog. (Read: 100 Moments of 2009 and Year 2010 Revisited)

My best things consist of moments and lessons that I want to treasure and remember. Now, let me make time for my blog and share my best memories of the year to you, my friends and readers. These are some of the memories, lessons and experiences that I would want to keep on remembering.

This year, I'll share some of these in blog. I'll start of with: Tech Moments of 2011

I didn't need or wished for the most high-tech tablets, laptops or other tech toys. I don't have a MacBook Pro, iPhone 4S, Nikon D3S or Nikon D5100, 3D Tv, etc. but I'm more than thankful for what me and my family got to have.

Asus K43SJ laptop

Asus_K43SJ

Asus_K43SJ-pink

It's pink and it has a shiny aluminum textured body. One of the best feature is its exclusive IceCool Technology which keeps palm rests cool. This laptop is affordable and makes me more productive.

Nokia E72 phone

This Nokia E72 phone wrapped up my July month. I love this well-designed and full-featured messaging smartphone.

Sony PSP

My son is truly at his happiest when he got a Sony PSP as a "pasalubong" from my mom.

China iPad (APad)

China-iPad

My daughter got a pink China iPad from my mom. Cool that this APad runs on Android OS.

Earlier this year, even my mom and and my brother bought new laptops too! My sisters got new laptops as well - a purple Samsung Series 3 305U1A netbook (It's thin, has a stylish metallic-tone and powerful!) and a Samsung NP RC420 notebook!

Plus, there's also my BenQ camera (which I've won from Facebook), a Nikon Coolpix L120 (which I enjoyed using) and a Canon EOS 1100D camera that my mom bought for my siblings.

There are other more things, but it seems like 2011 had been a laptop year for us. :)

My heart remains to be thankful.

Happy for all these. Stay tuned for my next Remember 2011 posts.

Meralco My Appliance Calculator

Electricity bills can make anyone cringe. Not just during summer where air conditioner is used for more hours a day, but also during the holiday season when Christmas lights are lit for more days and electric cookwares are used for extensive period.

How much is your monthly electric bill? Do you want to manage your electric bills better and know how much a particular appliance will consume electricity?

Now you can do this using the Meralco Appliance Calculator (MAC).

This is our Electricity Budget Buddy!

meralco appliance calculator, meralco electric bill

My Appliance Calculator is designed to be an electricity bill management tool of Meralco residential customers to help them: a) better manage their electric consumption and their electric bill; b) make wiser decisions in buying home appliances, and; c) get home energy efficiency tips that are customized to their home electricity consumption.

The “My Appliance Calculator” allows you to know the estimated consumption of your home appliances.

The “My Bill Manager” allows you to get an estimate of the household’s total electric consumption cost, know which appliances consume most electricity and get energy efficiency tips.

Also, if you need to target a certain monthly bill amount, use the "Target bill Estimator" to know how many kilowatt hours you can consume.

M.A.C. is a good way of checking what appliances contribute to our electricity bills. It is easy-to-use and a valuable tool for all consumers.

Anyone can access the M.A.C. from Meralco’s website: www.meralco.com.ph.

Try this and see for yourself!

[An Afternoon of Pampering]

It's good that I got invited to try this application. I honestly didn't know that M.A.C. existed way back 2003 and was just reintroduced.

I enjoyed the food from Bo's Coffee and the nail reflexology treatment at Beauty and Butter, located at the 5th level of SM Megamall.

Cell Service to Flip For

There are many cell phone service carriers available, and more entering the market all the time. Not all mobile phone service providers are created equal. When deciding which provider to sign up with to provide cell service, it's a good idea to consider the factors that could affect your experience.

1. Reception and Coverage
Take a look at reception and coverage in your area by talking to people you know; which provider or providers are known for having great reception (no dropped calls) in your area? Look online to see how many cell towers are located in your area: where you live, where you work, and places you visit regularly. For each provider, there are maps with this information. For instance, you could look up "Sprint coverage map" to find out about Sprint's coverage. Then, do the same for each provider in turn: AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.

2. Service
Customer service may not seem like a big deal to you now, but once you sign up and need help with your account or technical help, you'll want to be with a company that values its customers. Again, ask around to find out how others like their carrier's service. Also, look at online reviews.

3. Rates
It is always a good idea to shop around on rates, with prices coming down as competition in this area intensifies. It is customary for cell phone service providers to offer an introductory rate to new customers to win them over. Make sure you read the fine print before you decide to commit.

4. Contracts
A contract on cell phone service is often a minimum of one year and frequently a two-year contract. Before making this commitment, do your research. Also, ask about month to month plans and pre-paid plans; this might be a better option, depending on the offerings.

An informed consumer is a wise consumer. Shop wisely!

Asus Eee PC Seashell: My Early Birthday and Christmas Treat

I love my Asus Eee PC 1008HA Seashell 10.1" pearl black netbook that we bought weeks ago! I’ll be celebrating my 30th birthday five days from now, and this is an early birthday and Christmas treat for me! I am fascinated by its stylish and seamless overall look. It is exceptionally small, thin, light and fun to carry around. Now I can really go anywhere in style with my Asus Eee PC Seashell.

See what my new netbook looks like -

Asus Eee PC 1008HA notebook review

The Design and Feel

Asus Eee PC 1008HA design is inspired by the curves of a seashell which gives it a clean and distinct appearance. It is sleek-looking with a high gloss finish that makes it smudge-free. It is just 2.4 lbs light and measures an inch at its thickest point (which is quarter of an inch thicker than the Macbook Air). I feel comfortable bringing this anywhere.

The keyboard, which is 92% of a full sized keyboard, is extremely satisfying to use. The Wi-Fi and touchpad on/off buttons is just above the keyboard. Its chrome rocker button and unique dimple-laden trackpad supports multi-touch gestures responds with a firm click.

Asus Eee PC 1008HA netbook design

This
Asus Eee PC Seashell has a smooth side since all the ports are hidden behind those tiny flaps. It is where the USB ports, mic, headphone, mini VGA and Ethernet ports are located. On the underside of the netbook sits the VGA adapter dongle.

The Specifications and Performance

The Asus Eee PC 1008HA works the same as every other netbook. I can do my daily activities such as using Microsoft Office, emailing, blogging, and even working on online projects. My husband and my kids can listen to music, play Internet games and watch a movie.

Asus Eee PC 1008HA laptop netbook review

  • Genuine Microsoft Windows XP
  • 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 @ 1.66GHz
  • 1GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB hard drive + 10GB Eee Storage
  • 10.1" LED Backlight screen (1024x600 resolution) Color-Shine/Glossy Screen Technology
  • 1 Mini VGA Connector, 2 USB 2.0, 1 LAN RJ-45, 2 Audio Jack (Head Phone / Mic-in), Card Reader: MMC/ SD(SDHC)
  • 802.11 B/G/N Wi-Fi, 10/100Mbps Ethernet, Bluetooth
  • 1.3 megapixel webcam
  • 6 hours of life non-removable, rechargeable Li-Polymer battery
  • Dimensions: 10.32 (W) x 7.01 (D) x 1.01 (H) inches
  • Weight: 1.1Kg(2.42lbs)

I find my Asus Eee PC 1008HA Seashell aesthetically pleasing and cheaper than other high-priced rival netbooks. With a thin and light design and long life, this Seashell is most enticing netbook from Asus. Paying Php 24,000 (approximately $530) for the great design and performance makes it a worthy-purchase.

I even got these products for FREE - a Globe Tattoo Broadband Kit, a Canon iP1300 Printer and a Portable External DVDRW Drive.

Free Globe Tattoo Broadband Kit, Canon iP1300 Printer, Portable External DVD-RW Drive

+ Thanksgiving Note

Even if my family have our own desktop PCs, it feels great that each one of us now owns a netbook - my older brother with his HP Mini which he won from their company raffle, and my 3 sisters with an Asus Eee PC notebook. Recently, Mama got herself a new cellphone and a new car! Yes, it's really an early Christmas for all of us! Amidst everything... we remain blessed and for all these and more, I am thankful.

A crashed hard disk where no files could be recovered is hard to bear. It is like feeling emptiness and experiencing doom. I remembering losing a great collection of photos and videos, loads of information; which all lived on my hard drive.

My previous work requires me to access loads of previous information; thus, I always make sure that all these backup files can easily be recovered from the server. When My Computer Starts Talking

I am the computer and this is my life. I am running all day long. I rarely sleep. I only take a few hours of nap during the day and I am awake during the night. The kids cannot sleep without hearing music through my speakers. With me, they can sleep soundly.

I work full-time for the woman; and part-time for her husband and the kids. On a daily basis, I access emails, the Internet and other software applications. I save all information she needs and bookmark those websites. My hard drive is now full of pictures, music, downloaded movies, and programs. This is slowing me down, yet I still keep on going. I even caught viruses, has been attacked and there was a time that I almost crashed! Whew!

I feel wonderful to be in their hands and live with the other PC's in the family's home. I feel deeply treasured and needed. I love it every time she is sharing me with the kids. I have fun seeing the kids playing their games and watching videos online. I appreciate it when I receive check-ups from her husband too.

I know she is searching for laptops, browsing HP notebooks and reading laptop reviews. Just like her, I always try to be more understanding and supportive. She needs a laptop that she can carry with her anywhere and enjoy those free Wi-Fi zones!

HP netbook laptop computer
She learned of this great sale over at HP website. She is now eyeing the lustrous-looking HP Pavilion dv2z and the cool HP Mini 110 notebook. Those are amazingly good choices!

Everyone else should really take advantage of the $30 stackable site-wide coupon that HP is offering. It means that there is a $30 off orders $150 or greater at HP Home Store. Coupon code to use is SV2132. This coupon is Valid through October 31, 2009 or while supplies last. Restrictions and exclusions apply.

Okay, I need to go back to work and take a break soon.

Roller Skating Babies on Video

Have you seen the video of these babies?

I am giggling while I watching these adorable babies break dancing while on their roller skates. This is a commercial video advertisement of a high-priced French bottled water, Evian.

This video already has 3 million views and is becoming another sensation in YouTube. A lot of people are amazed as these babies groove to “Rapper’s Delight” by hip-hop producer Dan the Automater.

Yes the video is computer-generated. Ludo Fealy of the Motion Picture Company and his team in London filmed a skater doing the moves and programmed this to replicate the babies’ body. This is Evian’s Live Young advertising campaign.

Babies works like charm even if they are in bizarre situations. I love their facial expressions that are captured well in the video. Somehow it’s weird and creepy when they leap over park fences and railings and these babies are not wearing their safety gears!

I couldn’t resist watching this video even if it doesn’t make me thirst for Evian. I wonder if this viral video will boost Evian's sales.

Wolfram Alpha: The Knowledge Search Engine Goes Live

Wolfram Alpha is now live!

Prior to the much-awaited launch of Wolfram Alpha, there’d been hype over the past weeks that this would be “the engine that would rival Google’s”. But definitely, it won’t be and it won’t be a competitor! Wolfram Alpha is different from the traditional search engine; it provides new approach to search which they call “computational”. Google lists web pages relevant to the search term, whereas, at Wolfram Alpha, a user inserts a question which is then digested and the answer is computed based on its collection of data.
This is a site for answers to factual questions, but with lesser detail. Could it possibly be a Wikipedia contender?

Wolfram prefers to call it a “computational knowledge engine”. It tries to answer diverse questions or calculations from the simplest to the most complex ones. It can handle mathematical questions, physics and chemistry. It can generate and compare statistics, and build charts and graphs based on the data. It could really act like a giant scientific calculator. Indeed, it is an amazing and powerful tool! This would definitely be a huge help for most students, educators and academicians, scientists and the inquisitive public. This is a great supplement and research tool repertoire.

Wolfram Alpha’s Goal:
WolframAlpha's long-term goal is to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable and accessible to everyone.
WolframAlpha aims to bring expert-level knowledge and capabilities to the broadest possible range of people.
WolframAlpha is an ambitious, long-term intellectual endeavor that we intend will deliver increasing capabilities over the years and decades to come.

I've tried using Wolfram Alpha to see for myself what it can deliver; and this
is the coolest response I got -
Question:
Where are you?
Response: I live on the Internet

A few other simple queries -
Question: who is wolfram alpha?

wolfram alpha Question: $2000 to Philippine Pesowolfram alpha
I've tried a variety of queries such as getting information from an airline and a URL; calories and nutritional value computation; weather forecasts, population and unemployment rates, stocks analysis, gravitational computation, statistical analysis... and a whole lot more!

This is the most amazing so far - calculate the derivative of a function derivative of x^4 sin x. Here's the complete results and you can even check on the steps on how it arrived to that solution:
wolfram alpha
Wolfram is officially launched and is now available. With its pros and cons, I am still off to exploring Wolfram Alpha while the engine is still hot!
